Study Debunked: Lose more weight on low carb diet as opposed to a low fat diet

The results of a study comparing how much weight participants lost on a low carb versus a low fat diet were recently reported in The Annals of Internal Medicine. You may have heard about it, as the study got major press coverage because it claimed that those on the low carb diet lost more weight than those on the low fat diet. This outcome of course would shock any of us devoted to a whole-food plant-based lifestyle. And you are right to smell a rat, or a smelly caveman. Before you crawl into a paleo cave, read this article by Dr. David Katz, Director, Yale University Prevention Research Center. He read the small print and uncovered a study that was a biased comparison of a quite restricted, lower-calorie, low-fiber diet (the low carb group) and a less restricted, higher calorie, equally low-fiber diet (the low fat group). The low fat group actually was consuming 35% of their calories from fat, not much less than the average American diet! Read Dr. Katz's rebuttal of the study
